The Great Wall of China

(The physical one, not the firewall.)

We went for a day trip to see the Great Wall - I had no idea it was so close until we got to Beijing!  There were a few different sites available, and we chose Mutianyu, which is about 70km north-east of Beijing.  Mutianyu was supposed to be less touristed than the main one, and less strenuous for Stephen's Mum than the 10km hike that was also on offer in a different part of the wall.

To get to the actual wall from the carpark, we had the option of walking up the stairs or taking the chairlift - due to my intense hatred of chairlifts, Stephen and I decided to walk up.  The guy told us 40 minutes but it was really more like 15.  Once we got to the wall, it was pretty amazing.

One thing that I didn't realise before we got there was that pretty much the whole wall is just stairs, so you spend your entire time climbing up and down and up and down...

The wall itself is beautiful and stretches for a long way - there are 15 guard towers on this section of wall, which is a few km long.

Yes, we really were there.

Stephen is adept at using his mobile phone instead of checking out the scenery :)

  1. I think that's the section of wall we've been to. Did you catch the toboggan down from the wall? :)

  2. Nah, we skipped the toboggan. Did you? Was it good? It looked a bit tame from where we were standing :)

  3. Haha - of course we did. :) It was totally awesome, and yet totally lame at the same time. There were little Chinese men at every turn yelling "Get on it! Go faster!" (or maybe it was "slow down!"... there was lots of arm-waving and I don't actually speak Chinese).
    Good luck house-hunting!

  4. Haha, that's awesome - maybe we shouldn't have skipped it after all! Oh well, there's always next time ;)
