Monday was the long awaited delivery day - first there was a knock on the door to deliver my C$12 textbook (oh I love Amazon bargains), then the delivery of the package from Stephen's Mum containing my running shoes and study notes (thanks for posting it!), and then... nothing. We waited in the house for 9 hours without leaving before I finally called Purolator (Dell's delivery company) and asked them where the hell my computer was - they showed up finally at 7pm to deliver it.
Yay! New computer!
Monday we were also approved by the local car sharing company which is called AutoShare - basically you pay them $40 a year and you can hire any of their cars for $10 an hour including fuel and insurance through a web-based reservation system. It's pretty cool, and there are around 8 cars within 200m of our house, so there are plenty of options.
Now that I had a computer and access to a car, it was time to head over to Ikea to purchase a computer desk. We'd earmarked the one we wanted - 105cm2, fitting perfectly into the little corner at the back of our lounge room. So we hired the car - they had a little Honda Fit (Jazz) with folding rear seats downstairs at our building.
That's me getting ready to drive - as Stephen doesn't have an Ontario licence yet due to VicRoads, I'm the only one who's allowed to drive these cars. Despite an initial mishap where I tried to get into the passenger side, I managed pretty well considering it was only my second time ever driving on the wrong side of the road (and the other time was on a straight highway in the desert for about 20 minutes).
Despite going to Ikea with the intention of only buying a computer desk and maybe a couple of chairs, we ended up with quite a few things. Ikea is so cheap here compared to Australia! Things that we owned in Australia that cost us $150 to buy are $40 here.
A desk, two chairs, a bookcase and a second desk for the little bedroom. A little overboard.
Unfortunately, there's a bit of an issue. Our chairs were supposed to look like this:
But some horrible mean person must have moved the boxes around and I didn't cross-check the numbers in the self-service furniture pickup, because both of our chairs look like this:
So I am going to get some more opportunity to practice driving on the wrong side of the road tomorrow when we take them back and swap them over. Ugh, why do they even make pink chairs?
Here's the set-up furniture - hooray for my Engineering degree coming in handy!
Desk in the lounge room with my new computer and Stephen's laptop. (We've borrowed the dining chairs for now.)
The second bedroom with the smaller desk and the bookcase. This room is the one with the lovely view of Toronto city and it's also quite sunny and nice during the day, so our plan at the moment is to buy a bed/futon for when guests stay, but also to have the smaller desk in there so that it can be used as a "quiet space" for study or work.
The house is driving me somewhat crazy at the moment - as you can see in the photos, it has wooden floors. I hate wooden floors because they always look and feel dirty to me - and the white tiles on the bathroom floor are even worse. Hopefully I'll get used to it before the daily cleaning drives me insane.
To finish, here's a picture of the city I took the other morning at sunrise (8am :P) from the second bedroom :)
Cities are so beautiful :)
Sunrise isn't the time you wake up......
